Tipping Around the World
Everything you need to know about tipping etiquette globally
Why Do We Tip?
Tipping originated as a way to reward exceptional service. In some countries like the USA it is now an essential part of workers' income, while in others it remains entirely optional or even discouraged.
How Much Should I Tip?
The standard varies enormously by country. In the USA, 15โ20% at restaurants is considered the minimum. In the UK, 10โ15% is common. In Japan, leaving a tip may actually cause offence.
Splitting the Bill
When splitting with a group, calculate the tip on the full bill first, then divide the total equally. This is fairer than each person calculating their own share separately and avoids confusion.
Service Charges
Always check your bill before adding a tip โ many restaurants automatically add a 10โ15% service charge. Adding an additional tip on top of this is entirely your choice and usually not expected.
